Singapore, 25 October 2016 – Since the launch of its “Fight Cancer Together, One Litre at a Time” campaign in August, POKKA has raised S$60,803 in support of the Singapore Cancer Society. The cheque was presented to Mr. Albert Ching, Chief Executive Officer of Singapore Cancer Society by Mr. Alain Ong, Chief Executive Officer of POKKA International at Singapore Cancer Society’s newly-opened cancer rehabilitation centre at the JEM Office Tower.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality in Singapore where roughly 37 people are diagnosed with the life-threatening disease every day. According to the Singapore Cancer Registry, the number of people diagnosed with cancer has increased almost six-fold over the years – from 11,431 to 13,416 in 2014; and currently, with a total of 61,519 patients in Singapore.

“Cancer is a tremendous drain on the lives of patients and their families,” said Mr. Alain Ong, CEO of POKKA International. “However no one needs to fight cancer alone. By taking this step forward with our adopted charity, the Singapore Cancer Society, we hope to raise more awareness about cancer and encourage more people in Singapore to go for early and regular screenings with the hope of saving more lives.”

Mr. Albert Ching, CEO of Singapore Cancer Society said, “Tens of thousands of individuals have benefited from Singapore Cancer Society’s services and programmes. This has been possible, much thanks to many dedicated supporters and partners like POKKA that journey alongside to enable Singapore Cancer Society to serve those in need. Since 1964 when Singapore Cancer Society was formed, over $24.5 million has been disbursed to support some 31,300 needy cancer patients and their families through cancer treatment subsidies, free medical supplies and financial assistance. I thank POKKA for partnering Singapore Cancer Society in the fight against cancer, initiating the very successful ‘Fight Cancer Together, One Litre at a Time’ fundraising campaign.”

The “Fight Cancer Together, One Litre at a Time” campaign featured the brand’s best-selling POKKA Green Tea variants (POKKA Jasmine Green Tea, Honey Green Tea, Jasmine Green Tea No Sugar and Japanese Green Tea No Sugar) in a limited-edition packaging, where a sum of 0.6ȼ - 1ȼ was donated to the Singapore Cancer Society for every litre sold. The more number of litres purchased, the more POKKA donated per litre. The goal was to donate S$50,000 once a total of 5 million litres of these variants were sold.

With support from the people in Singapore, POKKA exceeded the original pledged donation amount of S$50,000 with an additional S$10,000 garnered from social media sharing of POKKA’s campaign video starring singer-songwriter Daphne Khoo and host-actor Paul Foster. The campaign videos, told through personal stories, intended to raise more awareness about the emotional and financial consequences of cancer and the importance of regular health screenings. During the course of the campaign, the video racked up more than 621,000 views, over 8,000 shares on Facebook, and many Singaporeans coming forward to share kind words of encouragement.

The remaining amount hailed from proceeds from sales of hand-crocheted ribbon magnets personally made by Singapore Cancer Society patients and volunteers at weekend roadshows organized by POKKA as part of the drive, as well as various cash donations from the public.
